I have simply longed for years, to have a plant stand! One not too fussy, but robust and handsome. I really wanted it to be ‘new’, as so many old ones are rickety, wobbly, and not strong enough to hold a burgeoning collection of special plants.
So finally, late last year, a prototype was made. A very rough & raw attempt, which is ideal for using ‘down the back’ where it sits well with our ironbark slab timber buildings, (and I’m hoping it doesn’t take years to weather to a lovely silver-grey).
But already my imagination had run riot! Painted plant stands! That was what I wanted to see. And painted with a flat texture, so that they might age and look a bit old-fashioned (retro/vintage…whatever description takes your fancy), yet feel just as appropriate in a contemporary urban setting as against a weatherboard cottage….(in the country or by the sea), set against stone or a rough-rendered wall, covered by a deep verandah. Just add plant collection!
And so it was that I found myself discussing the topic of paint with my friends at Murobond. I had the approximate colours in my head, and they had the paint…..CHALK PAINT.With colours named the likes of Rolling Fog, Green Room & Sea Salt, the notion became more appealing by the minute!
And here are the very first images of the end result!
The metal shelves will age with time. I think they’re practical and add an extra dimension to the aesthetic appeal. You could choose to have just the top shelf capped in metal, or all three.
And though I have ideas for other sizes and styles, I am thrilled to bits with these and they will be on view for the first time at the Collectors’ Plant Fair this coming weekend, 11 & 12 April. (And thereafter, in the Barn at Glenmore). I wonder if you will be as besotted with them as me! There will be no need for hesitation when it comes to displaying your very own special collection of plants…
