I’m going to share with you a little sequence of events that made for a VERY SATISFYING GARDENING DAY! These days are all too rare, but I feel deep down are the way they ought to be.
You see above, it was time for the various silverbeets & chards to be removed. In early winter I had tossed in a load of out-of-date seed and the result was spectacular! But I’ve long been meaning to pull it out, as it’s shading the tomatoes I planted this season. I left a few on the edge of the bed that have yet to produce a flower stalk & so can continue to harvest a small quantity of leaves & they are not in the way of my next plan (see next blog!).
The great joy of Kitchen Gardening is in the circle of plant life, and as an example, here is what happened this morning: I pulled out all these leafy greens – they have fed us well for months. I gave some to the chook, which is the same as feeding us, as the more good things she eats, the better her eggs. The remainder is excellent fuel for our compost heap, which over the coming months will be transformed into black gold, and so the surplus growth will be returned to the bed from whence it came, to feed and nourish the soil next season.
Below are a few of the leaves I saved for tonight’s dinner:

And below again is the result of an excellent day’s work: a vertiginous compost heap!
