The Borders in autumn hue…
Hello everyone
I’m delighted to invite you to the next in our series of intimate garden events. The first for 2023, this time it’s early autumn and one of my very favourite times of the year. SUNDAY 02 APRIL is the weekend before Easter, so suggests something of a celebratory nature; and I’m especially thrilled as I’ve persuaded SIMMONE LOGUE to provide a little something for you to eat as you wander, or perch on a chair under a tree (or in the sun…who knows what the weather will hold for us by then!).
Simmone is going to bake sourdough that very morning, in the kitchen of her Shearer’s Quarters at Essington Park, then “drive across the Abercrombie* to Glenmore”! How those words made me smile! I know Simmone is familiar to many of you…her smile and food are part of Sydney’s very fabric and I’m excited for her that she’ll soon be running cooking classes from those same Shearer’s Quarters she’s been lovingly restoring, just a hop, skip and a jump over the Blue Mountains from here.
Trout rillette with lots of lovely herbs and this season’s zucchini pickle made from Simmone’s garden at Essington Park will top one version of the sourdough; and roasted & marinated red capsicum with goat’s cheese and a sprig of fresh oregano will top another. In Simmone speak, “easy to pick up and devour; they’ll be fresh, perky and delicious!” Yum! And simply perfect to accompany an early autumn garden visit!
On the garden front, it’s all bouncing back post mid-summer prune. The Borders are filling in once again but this time in autumn hues…the grasses joining the burgundy, bronze, pink and apricot. Kapok flowers are on high; hydrangeas in mottled form; the Kitchen Garden is newly rotated; dahlias are flourishing, pumpkins a-romping and the field is dotted with roses. It’s just a golden time of year to immerse oneself in a garden…to watch the bees, the leaves a-flutter, to inhale the air, to slow…
Please wear your very favourite Easter garden hat! Well…why not? We’ll open the gates at 11.30, so there’s no need to rush your Sunday morning. I’ll greet you with a herbal tisane and tick your name off the list then you can go for a wander. Simmone will be on standby for 12.45 as you swing by the Dairy and at 1.30 we’ll also have tea, coffee and a little morsel for the sweet toothed amongst you. I’ll open the Barn around then too, which should give us plenty of time beforehand to meet in the garden, identify plants, answer questions and even visit the field together; before those who want to, start trying on hats and dresses for size and spritzing botanical waters all around!
How I hope you will be tempted to join us for a very relaxed SUNDAY in the AUTUMN GARDEN. All the details are here, and if you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
With very best wishes as always,
Mickey
ps There are just a couple of spots left at this coming Saturday’s MORNING in the KITCHEN GARDEN…so hop on board for an immersive morning with me in all things kitchen gardening!
