In preparation for today’s Kitchen Gardening Day, we collected a huge bundle of bamboo from dear friends during the week.  Each rod has since been clipped of its foliage and sorted for making structures for our autumn/winter sowings of peas and broad beans.  Thank you Henry – I promise we’re going to try & grow our own!

It isn’t easy to find suitable material for the main structures – in summer we use our own rods from the spring clipping of the Mulberry tree – they’re as long & straight as we seem to produce in the garden and though they look divine, they only manage one season before disintegrating.  Which is why there’s an annual autumn trip in the ute over the hills…
