Here at Glenmore, August is the month the brassicas begin.  The white cabbage moth has finally been chased off by the cold;  the days are sunny and so finally this rich group of leafy greens has the opportunity to come into its own.
We have mountains of the Tuscan cale cavolo nero, broccoli is perfection, khol rabi is forming is bulbous base while sending up grey/green leaves with exquisite purple spines and cabbages are just beginning to form their hearts.  I think brassicas much prefer to grow south of here, so we’ll enjoy looking at, as well as eating them, while we can….
