It may have taken me a few years to work out initially, but once I got the process sorted, our own compost has become better with each batch. It never ceases to amaze me that we can turn a heap of garden waste in every shape, size and texture (above); into the most beautiful, chocolate coloured compost (below). And if I take it one step further, and pass it through a fine sieve, I end up with something resembling seed raising mixture its so fine. (It LOOKS as if it came out of a plastic bag, a thought that made me giggle the other day!).
I find this sequence of events incredibly thrilling! (I know you thought I was mad, I expect this confirms the fact!). I barrowed several loads of this lovely stuff over Easter to the winter ‘legume’ bed, and have quite a few more loads still to shovel, in order to finish preparation for the coming season’s veg.
Our Winter Kitchen Gardening Day on Friday 3 May will see the afternoon session focussing on how to make beautiful muck like this – all participants should prepare to get down & dirty (if they feel like it)….otherwise they can just watch me get filthy and make notes instead! This is a session not to be missed!
