EVENT: FOLLOW-UP | THE ART OF DISTILLATION with THE ALEMBICS LAB
EVENT: THE ART OF DISTILLATION with JILL MULVANEY, THE ALEMBICS LAB, Tuesday 26 September
About Jill Mulvaney, Founder and Head Distiller, The Alembics Lab www.thealembicslab.com
Jill Mulvaney is one of New Zealand’s leading distillation experts. She teaches distillation workshops throughout NZ and internationally, enjoying teaching partnerships with internationally renowned phytochemists and aromatic distillers in Europe and America.
Jill’s practice is informed by decades of experience. She teaches and consults on all aspects of plant extraction for natural aroma and flavour. Jill also develops ideas and products for a wide range of industries and is behind a number of award-winning gins. Jill is passionate about the character of plants, the alchemical wonder of distillation and enjoys sharing her knowledge with others.
Her formative years growing up on an isolated farm in Hawkes Bay and her experience distilling New Zealand and Australian natives, forms the basis of her deep engagement with the natural world – which remains her greatest inspiration.
We hope you will join us for this one-day stand-alone workshop…making the very most of Jill’s experience whilst she’s here from across the ditch for our two-day workshop the preceding weekend.
– Learn hydro-distillation, using a traditional copper alembic still, working with plant material from the garden
– Discover the process of steam distillation to produce your own artisan essential oils using a traditional column alembic
– Learn what plants are suitable and how we can transform them into products and beverages for health, beauty and well-being
– Looking after our products, storage and longevity
– Make a hydrogel and a balm
This will be a rare opportunity to completely immerse in the art of distillation, the process, the nitty gritty, the alchemy, the beauty and the resulting bounty. Whether old hand with an inevitable raft of questions (the art of distillation is a lifetime in the making) or keen beginner, this one-day workshop will be an enormous treat for all who attend; participating with Jill as guide and teacher as she works her way through explanation and example.
The day will begin at 10am with morning tea; then we’ll gather from the garden, enjoy a morning session in the Dairy, break for an evocative lunch with Sivine and Karima of SUNDAY KITCHEN at the long tables in the Loggia; with another immersive afternoon session to follow.
Cost $420.00 10am – 4/4.30’ish
Pre-order your copy of Ann Harman’s just-released 2nd edition of Harvest to Hydrosol to collect at the workshop. The distiller’s bible has been out of print for some years and is a must for distillers old and new (but is weighty, so expensive to post!). You can purchase here via the Alembics Lab website and Jill will ensure your copy is waiting for you. Enter the code Glenmore to receive a discount and in the ‘notes’ enter ‘collect at Glenmore House Workshop’. I’ve ordered mine!
