India Flint is the original discoverer of the eucalyptus ecoprint, author of “Eco Colour” and “Second Skin”, and holds a Master of Arts [by research] from the University of South Australia (2001).

Her work has been described as using the earth as the printing plate and time as the press. Flint has designed costumes for dance (‘breathe’ for Leigh Warren + Dancers was included in the 2012 Edinburgh Festival of Arts; ‘debris’ choreographed by Frances Rings for the West Australian Ballet opened at the Perth Festival in 2007) and written books on dyeing and felting.

She exhibits internationally and has work in museums in Australia, the USA and Europe. While working on costumes at the Yamaguchi Performing Arts Centre in 2006, she cheekily gave the name ‘hapazome’ (kitchen Japanese that translates as ‘leaf-dye’) to the technique she was using to add colour to a 6 x 6 metre floorcloth, only discovering years later that there was already a Japanese name for the technique (tatakizome).

In 2018 she created the School of Nomad Arts, the art school she would have liked to attend herself, where an online community gathers around a virtual village well learning everything from eucalyptus dyeing to pattern cutting and string making.

About the day:

Join us at 10am each day when the fun will begin…starting with morning tea, to get you in the right frame of mind for all that lies ahead which is, in India’s words…

“Join India in the magical garden at Glenmore for two days of handstitching, stories, up-cycle cutting tricks and dyeing while being sustained by Mickey’s fabulous lunches. You will be making either an apron or a loose buttoned coat, both perfect for gardening, writing, cooking or work in the studio, both liberally adorned with pockets as well as patches of other fabrics. On the first day we will create the shape of the garment and sew it by hand, adding a poetic line or two of text if we wish. On the second day we will mordant the garment in India’s magic potion and (*weather permitting) bundle it ready for a transformation in the cauldron. While we wait for the brew to bubble there will be time to stitch a small notebook ready to slip into a pocket. In the event that there is a total fireban we will add colour to our garments by other means and guidance will be provided so that you can ecoprint your work at home if you wish”.

*in the event that weather advice precludes an open fire, leaf printswill be added to the mordanted garments by other means (hapazome…see above) – nothing prevents India from resolving her concept – she always has a solution in her kit bag!

Please bring:

– Two pre-loved shirts (undyed if you wish to add colour, but can be black or dark grey if you’re content to add contrasting patches)
– Scissors, needles, safety pins, sewing and embroidery threads (preferably uncoloured or can be black for contrast)
– Buttons and beads for embellishments if you have them
– A bag of natural fibre cloth scraps (shopping bag size will do)
– A sheet of A1 sized paper (can be drawing quality or watercolour, white or kraft brown, lined or graph or plain) :: the papers will be shared to make the notebook
– Hat, comfortable shoes
India will prepare a kit of cloth and thread treasures from her collection for each participant as well.
