ALCHEMILLA LUNAR CULTIVATION with PHOEBE EAST, SATURDAY 24 AUGUST
About Phoebe and Alchemilla www.alchemillastudio.com @alchemilla__
Gardening by the moon has been practiced throughout the ages, connecting us to the ancient rhythm & wisdom of the cosmos.
After completing her undergraduate BA, Phoebe’s passion for the natural world and a desire to return to the land in some capacity led her to pursue further education.
She earned a Graduate Certificate in Landscape Design, followed by a PDC and Permaculture Teaching Certificate. During these years she worked in kitchen gardens and nurseries but something was missing from her career trajectory… Enter, floristry.
Phoebe soon discovered that the conventional floristry industry was fraught with issues; petrochemicals, mono cropping, GMOs, extensive air miles, land degradation, waste and pollution: beautiful, ephemeral flowers were frequently grown using methods that were harmful to ecosystems and out of sync with nature. After many years working within the permaculture and organic gardening realm, this realisation galvanised her to establish the Alchemilla Flower Farm to grow seasonal, non toxic & good for the earth flowers, initially in the Northern Rivers and later in South West Victoria.
The farm was established using permaculture principles and soon after, biodynamics. The incorporation of the lunar cycles, astrological transits and the biodynamic preparations swiftly became central to all cultivation practices on the farm & Phoebe’s inner child was delighted to be immersed in a framework that resonated with her early curiosities.
Working with the lunar cycle created a harmonious rhythm of consistent, actionable practice on the farm that connected the universal energy of the skies above to the earth below. The remarkable results on the farm inspired the creation of the Almanac, aimed at creating a resource to make these practices and principles readily accessible and tangible.
The ALMANAC is a comprehensive resource that blends many elements of holistic cultivation. While it primarily serves as an annual entry level biodynamic lunar planting guide, it also includes:
-
Insights into holistic agricultural frameworks such as Permaculture, First Nations agriculture, and Regenerative Agriculture
-
Glossaries of holistic cultivation techniques and lunar terminology
-
Wheel of the Year observances
-
Moon phases and how to use these daily, weekly or monthly
-
Monthly biodynamic lunar planting calendars (sidereal)
-
Monthly ‘plant now’ and ‘to do’ suggestions
-
Plant-planet synergy
-
Astrological seasons (new in the 2024/25 edition)
