Timing is everything in the Kitchen Garden, and it isn’t always easy to get right. But just now, things are looking good. ‘Cut & come again’ leaves are growing quickly from scattered seed (we did this on our kitchen gardening day on 1 March), while the hearting lettuce are taking their time to form in the next rows. (Skip back to my post though of 28 Feb to see when I’d just planted them out – there’s a big difference in the space of a month!). The next rows, were planted a week ago, whilst others were planted during the intervening weeks in the guild beds on the far side of the apple arch.
With any luck, this butter lettuce will be just perfect for eating about this time next week. Let’s hope no-one else gets there first!
