While on the topic of things ‘romping away’ at this time of year (yesterday’s post on pumpkins), I thought it a good opportunity to show you just how very tall the stems of Jerusalem artichokes get, in case you’re thinking of planting these delectable golden nuggets….

That’s them, in the background, topped with small, yellow, daisy-like flowers.  I took the tape measure to them and the tallest is 3.5 metres!  It’s perhaps worth baring this in mind, when you contemplate burying one of those small rhizomes into the soil….but the satisfaction in digging them up is immense….and we’ll be eating them just as soon as the weather cools….
