For those who thought I was telling little white lies at my talk on Kitchen Gardening at our Open Weekend, here is proof that there was indeed bean seed in the ground where I suggested it was! The seedlings are doing well now but I’ll wait another couple of weeks before pulling out my spares, in case of disaster!

In the intervening weeks, I’ve collected the last of the broad beans and stayed up one late evening ’til midnight double-shelling them, to make them into the yummiest broad bean smash, which we enjoyed at our October Kitchen Gardening Day….

And picked yet another bunch of globe artichokes to poach in white wine, garlic, oil and thyme….

But on some days, the pickings are lean. In this case, a few asparagus, a sprig of lovage and a couple of chive flowers made what may have been a plain omelette, rather sublime….
