Event name: LATE SUMMER in the KITCHEN GARDEN with MICKEY, SUNDAY 25 February

JOIN MICKEY…

We’ll meet in the Dairy at 10am for a refreshing tisane, cup of tea or coffee and cake…(afterall a big morning lies ahead!). Then we’ll launch into our introductory session, first exploring the design principles that underpin the layout and aesthetic of the kitchen garden here and compare the two different growing methods employed. These topics play an important role and as the day progresses, you will begin to see just how you might choose to incorporate parts of these concepts into your very own kitchen garden. We’ll talk too, about seasonal produce, the veg famiy groups, crop rotation, companion planting and seeds (collecting, germination, propagation) and…soil.

By late morning (hats on) we’ll be out in the garden for an immersive experience, on close inspection of all we’ve just discussed, whilst looking too, at the relevant tasks of the moment: from care and nurture of veg through this growing season and discussing how the next is about to take its place…the how and when of seasonal crop rotation. It’s now we’ll talk about planting, staking, support structures, pests, protection….as we taste our way too, around the garden. Eventually we’ll end up at the compost (if not in it!). It’s here we’ll discuss in detail, the most important topic of all….for it, and soil…are everything…without which none of the rest is possible, including our own good health and nutrition.

By 2pm we should be back in the Dairy for late little seasonal something at the long tables…made from the bounty we’ve just explored. Time to reflect on the information and visual overload, to quietly digest, ask questions and continue the conversation.

After lunch you can choose some seeds to sow in your own garden, and you will be welcome to potter in the Barn and linger longer in the garden.

This is a time of enormous activity in the kitchen garden…of bountiful summer-grown produce alongside the beginnings of crop rotation…one of the very best times to learn all the kitchen garden has to teach us, about growing.

Suitable for absolute newcomers and old hands alike. Everyone is welcome.

Please wear sensible shoes, layers (the temperature can always swing wildly here!) and bring a hat – perhaps a brollie too as we’ll go ahead rain, hail or shine!
