I do promise to stop with the persimmon posts soon….but right now, their presence is intoxicating and I can’t escape them…it’s persimmon season!  As I opened the bedroom curtains on Saturday morning, I was horrified to see the trees alive with….yes, you guessed it….BIRDS!!!  They always know when they’re onto a good thing. The trees are very old and far to big to net, so wejust try to get there first (so off I went in a mad rush before breakfast!). The fruit are exquisite, set as they are against gnarled, lichen-covered branches.

And what a haul.  My first old basket was simply overflowing.  Enter the fab new basket I discovered recently, to stock in the Barn for just this purpose!  This is the first time one has been put to work and it clearly arrived just in the nick of time!

While collecting is one thing….picking over & sorting is another.  Out with the bad (tied up in plastic & into the bin); ripe ones on a plate (fit for gorging!), while the rest are laid out on a flat basket on the kitchen table where I can keep a watchful eye on their ripening state.  The kitchen is filled with their delicate fragrance and they will definitely feature in what we eat at this week’s numerous garden events.
