Event name: RAG RUGS with ILKA WHITE

RAG RUGS with ILKA WHITE, Sunday 09 July 2023

About Ilka White: @ilkawhite  www.ilkawhite.com.au

Ilka White is an artist whose practice spans textiles, teaching, cross-disciplinary collaboration and art-in-community. Her work reflects the principles of sustainability and often responds to the forces at play within the natural world. An abiding interest in world textile traditions also informs many aspects of Ilka’s making and teacing practice.

Ilka’s popular workshops and classes reflect her love of the handmade and her contemporary use of traditional making methods. An experienced and dedicated teacher, she’s a great believer in the ability of beauty and creativity to lift the spirit.

Event description:

The day will begin at 10am with morning tea (and a just out-of-the-oven homemade cake!). An introduction to the tradition and techniques of braiding rugs will lead to Ilka’s instruction and guidance as you begin your own work. The day will  be punctuated with a heart-warming but simple seasonal lunch and the afternoon will see you working with confidence. Ilka anticipates you will have the beginnings of your very own rag rug…to complete in your own time through the remaining winter days!

We ask you to bring a collection of clean, worn cloth and rags that you would like to incorporate, but I’m excited too that Nano is also going to supply a big bundle of scraps of her pretty hand-blocked cottons from Pigotts Store for you to delve into!

We anticipate the day will end at 3.30/4.00pm

To bring: Notebook, fabric scissors, a clipboard (or a magazine and large bulldog clip) to anchor your braiding, a slender crochet hook (approx size 3ml) or a handful of small safety pins. If you have examples of recycled rag rugs in your posession or pictures, Ilka asks that  you bring them along for show & tell! And…most  importamtly…clean,  worn out cloth you would like  to cut into rags for your samples.

As always, you will be welcome to linger longer in the garden and potter in the Barn.

Cost $275.00 per person

*We have had one late cancellation so if you’re keen to join us this Sunday, please contact contact Mickey to arrange your place.
