“I’m off to plant the garlic”, I recall saying after lunch. I decided more than a month ago into which bed it would go this year, and consequently dug & fertilised it in preparation…..& pulled out a few stones. Now I don’t really understand how this can be, but I’ve long held a theory that clay rises to the surface (no matter how you try to combat it with great loads of compost, gypsum and any other brilliant recommendations), but I do believe that rocks have exactly the same notion…..honestly – what IS this, above? They’re not little pebbles, they are ROCKS, and I’ve dug this bed in preparation for various veg now for 4 years…..that has to be a tick in the box for raised beds (this one is not).
And so, despite all good intentions, I’ve planted only half my garlic bed…..with all that good time going on rock-breaking!! But do look at the beaut garlic cloves now in the ground – saved from last year’s harvest of Patrice Newell’s best. I’ll have to do the other half next week, as I’ve learned to take heed & NOT keep working in the same position for hours on end or I’ll never be able to stand up straight on Monday morning! Can’t wait for our day with Sarah Key on 6 June….The Gardener’s Back!
