Well, actually no, not those sweet peas! (though old fashioned fragrant pink ones have been doing their thing for a month or so elsewhere in the garden). These are ‘purple podded Dutch peas’, and there’s a good row of them in flower in the Kitchen Garden. As their pretty purple blooms fade and wither, a deep purple pod begins to form and any day now, the first batch will be ready to pop out tiny green shelling peas.
I’ve been saving seed of these peas from year to year, since I first noticed them in a catalogue in about 1994! I can’t wait for mounds of single peas to join the sugarsnaps we’ve been enjoying, even if it does mean I have to shell them!
