While on the topic of peas….the very first sweet peas are beginning to flower!  This very old-fashioned & highly fragrant one, Painted Lady, was developed in England in 1731. (I was scouring my Diggers catalogue and see where ‘In 1699 Sicilian monk Father Francisco Cupani sent some seeds collected in the wild to his friend Dr Uvedale in England and it was from this wild Cupani strain’ that she was developed).

She happily scatters her seed each year around and under the tunnel we build for her to climb, just beside the kitchen steps. Pure heaven….
