I just thought I’d give you an update on the great pace of growth in the winter Kitchen Garden – there’s nothing dormant here! The segment shown in the image above was nothing but bare compost, just a very short while ago, and I’m simply thrilled with the progress in each of the garden beds. Broad beans are up to the first rung of their ‘box’ structures, whilst peas are clambering up their sticks. Here you can see fennel coming along a treat, parsnips filling their designated space and lettuces forming hearts (butter) or an endless supply of cut & come again leaves (oakleaf).

In another bed, a group of mignonette lettuce are at their most spectacular, as well as their most crunchy and delicious. The downside of perfection in the kitchen garden, is the necessity to eat things at their peak and so….enjoy the image, as now ’tis no longer (I just took a knife to one!!).  Oh well – best get some new seedlings underway…we all know how very fleeting beauty is….
