MICKEY’S BLOG
In the days before Instagram, Mickey kept a regular blog of snippets from Glenmore House.

Kitchen Gardening Day prep….
I was down in the root store having a forage this afternoon....some are beginning to sprout, but still there are plenty of onions, garlic and potatoes. And so tomorrow's menu is looking something like this: Homemade Rustic Loaf Razorback Olives with Lovage...
Books have finally arrived….
Better late than never I guess....I'd intended to have good stock of Janelle McCulloch's terrific book 'The Modern Kitchen Garden' in time for our Open Garden Weekend.....it was a nice idea. Anyway, they have JUST arrived, so if anyone would like me to post one,...
Labyrinth here for Open Garden Weekend….
It's here & in one piece! BIG, BIG THANK YOU to Emily Simpson for marking it out yesterday....not an easy thing to do!! But its all in tact this morning - no large wombat has waddled across to mess it up!! We are opening in support of Australia's Open Garden...
The Essential Work Dress…
Well - here is the very first image of the Essential Work Dress! And the second! I've been wearing the prototype (above) a LOT these last few months....and I simply love it to bits.... The Essential Work Dress has been a long time on the drawing board. Perhaps I...
Rock-breaking & garlic…
"I'm off to plant the garlic", I recall saying after lunch. I decided more than a month ago into which bed it would go this year, and consequently dug & fertilised it in preparation.....& pulled out a few stones. Now I don't really understand...
Painted Easter eggs…
Once upon a time, when the girls were much younger...the lead-up to Easter was all about painting eggs....sadly no longer, time passes too fast, but the memories last forever...and each year, the eggs come out of the large glass storage jars, a few more hairline...
A little Good Friday lunch…
In my jet-lagged haze I forgot to buy anything for Friday's lunch when en route from travels on Thursday morning: now THIS is what Kitchen Gardening is all about.....as long as you have a staple or two in the fridge or cupboard. It just so happens there was some...
Easter roses…
Well - I'm working away from the front of the house and I've left all the yellow behind...Easter is pink once again!
Happy Yellow Easter…..
It's a yellow Easter, whichever way you look at it.....this is the vision of daffodils to just one side of our friends' drive in England last weekend, where we attended a wonderful springtime wedding. And below, is the vision that awaited me this morning when I...
What a morning….
Clear as a bell, dew on the hedge tops...(and I think the ivy is taking over the old stables but it looks enchanting...)
Not quite Coronation Chicken….
Actually, I really don't think this is one of my best photos! It was scrumptious! Chicken studded with pomegranate seeds from our fruiting hedge (as well as grapes & mint) - it was completely bejewelled, in keeping with the day's topic of Windsor &...
Sapphires & King Edwards…
Well - the Sapphire & King Edward potatoes are all scrubbed in preparation for tomorrow's Windsor & Jewels Day! There are JUST enough King Edwards left....(how pretty are they with their blotchy pink markings?). Peter Clinch from Oaks Organic Chickens...
Blackboard Menu in the Dairy…!!
Now you will laugh at my childlike enthusiasm, but I have SO looked forward to being able to do this!! At LAST, I have a blackboard in the Dairy, upon which to write our Kitchen Garden Day menus!! Now our participants can see from the moment they arrive, that...
More spikes…
The spiky plants all seem to be coming into their own this last week or so. The Yucca behind Humphrey's Bench is looking spectacular. I so enjoy the way these great textural forms anchor the garden after all this time. There are plenty more wee specimens that...
The Essential Work Dress – watch this space…
This has been A LONG TIME coming.... So I'm not going to spill the beans all in one go! Watch this...
Autumn garden breakfast…
Figs & pomegranate from the garden....things could be worse!!
Jerusalem artichokes…
While on the topic of things 'romping away' at this time of year (yesterday's post on pumpkins), I thought it a good opportunity to show you just how very tall the stems of Jerusalem artichokes get, in case you're thinking of planting these delectable golden...
Pumpkin patch….
This year the pumpkin patch was SO slow to get a move on. I planted the seed late and, of course, there was no sun. But it's been simply galloping away these last weeks! As well as up & over the wigwam, the vines have escaped over the fence and are romping...
Autumn pears….
Nothing says autumn quite like pears. I'm sure I shouldn't have allowed 4 to grow on one spur, but they do make a pretty picture.....and as I seem to produce so few of them, I can't bear to discard a single one!
Fragrant white ginger…
One of the most perfumed flowers of all....(while the yellow has filled the gallery through an open door, with its delicate fragrance since January), it isn't until early March that the first white blooms appear on some much-treasured & well-placed specimens. ...
